Tosney Building
est. 1882
The second building added to the Perman’s complex (see 310 and 314 for more details) was the Tosney Building, constructed in 1882 by John Tosney. He owned the building in its early years, outfitting the space with a saloon and bowling alley to create a premium entertainment location downtown. The building’s history becomes a bit foggy after that until the mid-20th century, although it is clear that the Tri-State Telephone Company and the Northfield Area Chamber of Commerce each had their offices here for a time during that stretch.
In 1965, Orval and Jean Perman bought out the space. Until then, their clothing store had only occupied the MacKay Building to the south, but Perman’s only continued to grow, remaining here until the couple’s retirement in 1993. The Tosney and MacKay buildings have since stayed adjoined. Today, Content Bookstore—the store that lies within the parameters of the Tosney—and Northfield Yarn have collaborated to create an inviting space that unites the two shopfronts with one main exterior door. The Tosney Building, which has of course seen some repainting work since its original construction, is a fairly simple commercial-style structure. However, it does showcase some interesting architectural elements, such as its decorative corbels and window arches.
