Northfield News Building

est. 1884

Since 1876, the Northfield News has stood the test of time. And since 1884, so too has this building, the original headquarters of the News. It faced a major challenge in November of 1964, when a freight elevator malfunction started a fire which quickly expanded. When it was over, the roof had caved in, but the walls stood firm. As the Northfield News themselves reported in their centennial edition twelve years later, the outside walls never even heated up. The facade of the upper floors still remains the same today.

Even this fire was not a fatal blow for the Northfield News.

And even this blow was not fatal for the News, who soon moved to a new location on 5th Street where they resided for many years. They sold the space to Thompson & Gill Real Estate, and after changing hands a couple more times, 311 Division (only one half of the property that the NNB encompasses) has settled down in the hands of Division Street Dance, a dance academy and studio open for classes downtown. Its neighboring property within the building at 313, historically a retail space leased by the News, is now occupied by Petalina, a gift shop.
