Storlie Building
est. 1980
The Storlie Building is one of downtown’s most recent additions. In 1980, it replaced the two separate buildings that had stood on the 301 and 303 lots previously. The northernmost space had been occupied by the Northfield Taxi Company’s offices, in a small structure that had stood since 1947. Predating this were several small residence buildings, as shown in an 1884 aerial map of downtown.
In the 303 lot was the Grant Building, established in 1890. It found this name after being bought out by the Grant Electric Company, who stayed in the building into the 70s. After a stint of ownership by Fine Print Bookstore, realtor Bill Storlie purchased both properties, pitching a renovation proposal to the Housing & Redevelopment Authority. He was soon given the green light on the project, and the Storlie Building still stands today, now home to Cakewalk.
