Nutting Block
est. 1893
Constructed in the Richardsonian Romanesque style in 1893, the Nutting Block has long been a hub for office and retail space in Northfield’s downtown. It stands adjacent to the Archer House, and the businesses housed in the two historic buildings thrived off of each other’s nextdoor presence for many years. John C. Nutting built the structure as an expansion location for the Northfield Knitting Company in 1893, and in the decades that followed, it housed the likes of Marshall’s Department Store and Nelson Furniture, among others. This was also one of many buildings downtown revitalized by developer Dallas Haas in the 80s and 90s, and under his ownership, it saw an extensive architectural revamping alongside this reworking of commercial space. Beginning in the 1980s, the building became a complex known as the Nutting Mall, deviating from the streetside shopfront standard of the rest of the downtown. Haas’ renovations provided space for over 20 businesses and office spaces across the three floors and basement of the building.
After Haas’ passing in 1995, the Nutting Block property came under the control of the Department of State, as Haas had no will. The next year, it was purchased by four proprietors who had been leasing office space in the building’s upstairs, a group that the Northfield News dubbed the “New kids on the block.” The Block, even through the Archer House fire in 2020, has persisted and continues to be one of Northfield’s premier business locations on Division Street. It continues to thrive as the Nutting Mall, home to 26 local businesses and offices today.
