25 Bridge Square
Northfield National Bank Building
est. 1966
The Northfield National Bank Building was constructed in 1966. It is representative of the architectural style of the 1960s United States. The gray cement facade, sharp right-angled edges, large windows, and overall imposing look make the building an example of brutalist architecture in Northfield.
This has not always been the structure that stood in this space. In 1878, Citizens Bank became the second major bank in Northfield’s downtown. It had a look far more in line with the rest of the historic district, the majority of which was constructed in the decades immediately following the town’s founding in 1855. Many of these original buildings have remained since the mid-to-late 19th century, with few demolished. This lot, however, contains a notable exception.

Throughout the history of both buildings, a bank has presided here for most of Northfield’s tenure. Following Citizens Bank was the Northfield National Bank, who was the group who owned the 1878 building in 1966, choosing to demolish and replace it. In 1987, the bank took up the name of Community National Bank, who would go on to eventually move out under the name of Community Resource Bank and sell the space to Neuger Communications Group in 2011, a major expansion for Neuger’s at the time. They have stayed here ever since.
