A little Election Day History

Since it is Elections Day, I would like to give you some Election Day history.

Election Day is the Tuesday on or after November 2nd.

November was selected because the harvest work was done.

Tuesday was selected because many people had to travel the day before to reach the polling place. Since most people did not travel on Sunday for religious reasons, they did not want it to be on a Monday.

They did not want Election Day to fall on November 1st because it is All Saints Day.

They did not want Election Day to fall on the first of the month because many shop keepers did their books for the preceding month on the first.

So there are some quick facts about Election Day. Now I want to tell you a story and how I am connected to a Presidential election.

It goes all the way back to 1876, yes that year that is so ingrained in many Northfielders minds. The 1876 election pitted Democratic candidate Samuel Tilden against my Great Great 4th cousin Rutherford B. Hayes a Republican. Now this election was a lot like the election in 2000. Tilden won the popular vote by about 250,000 votes however, there were 20 electoral votes that were contested. They were South Carolina, Louisiana, Florida and Oregon. A committee was formed to decide were these votes would go and it was composed of 8 Republicans and 7 Democrats. They voted along party lines and Hayes won the election of 1876 and became the 19th President of the United States.

Key Ohio Republicans like James A. Garfield and the Democrats, however, agreed at a Washington hotel on the Wormley House Agreement. Southern Democrats were given assurances that if Hayes became president, he would pull federal troops out of the South and end Reconstruction. An agreement was made between them and the Republicans: if Hayes's cabinet consisted of at least one Southerner and he withdrew all Union troops from the South, then he would become President. This Compromise of 1877 is sometimes considered to be the second Corrupt Bargain.

So that is my connection to a Presidential Election. I hope you all enjoyed my story and get out and vote today! It will make you feel good!
