2009 Silver Stars Game Accounts

Silver Stars in Rochester
The Northfield Silver Stars had their moments in the Vintage Base Ball Festival hosted by the Rochester Roosters at the History Center of Olmsted County July 18. In timed 50-minutes matches, we lost to an invigorated Rooster squad 8-3, defeated the Applejacks of LaCrescent, 9-7, and then were nicked, 6-4, by the St. Croix Base Ball Club.

The highlights included Dean "Wheel" Odette succumbing to the Applejacks inventive hidden apple trick and absolutely decimating the lobbed fruit with his willow.  Jeff "Tornado" Silkey and Paul "Candy" Richardson knocked a few balloons off the wall in left field. Christian "Hacksaw" Hakala and Doug "The Admiral" Morris both had productive days striking. But the play of the day was a spectacular catch by "Woodchuck" Kruse in deep centerfield. Legging it full tilt to his left, back to the infield, he converged on the moon shot just as it came raining down  through a tree. And he one hands it on the dead run. The bench erupted in shocked amazement.

Thanks to all who played and represented Northfield and the Northfield Historical Society so honorably. We will take some time off and then travel to New Prague on Saturday, Aug. 15, to take on the New Prague Fire Department as part of the department's centennial celebration.

Silver Stars win three matches at Afton
The Northfield Silver Stars took on all comers at Afton June 7 and won three of three matches. They defeated the St. Croix Base Ball Club 6-4, the Afton Redlegs 12-7 and the Rochester Roosters 18-3. The boys ground out a win in the opening match against St. Croix. It took a couple of innings to put their vaunted defense on display, and three runs in the top of the fourth sealed the victory.

In the second match, the Silver Stars scored six runs in the bottom of the last inning to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat against the Redlegs. With one hand dead and two runners on, the short scout for the Redlegs muffed a balloon by Scott Richardson and the winning tally was recorded.

In the last match, the Silver Stars recorded a dozen tallies in the top of the first stanza, completely demoralizing the Rochester nine. Jeff “Tornado” Silkey swung a big willow, striking a triple and home run, both in the first inning. Doug “The Admiral” Morris blasted a homerun in his second strike in that same inning. All of the strikers hit well and completely flummoxed a proud Rooster squad.  Playing for the Silver Stars on the day was: Curtis Tiano, Jeff Silkey, Doug Morris, Dean Odette, Paul Richardson, Scott Richardson, Greg Muth, Dan Hagen, Lon Kruse, Bill Johnson and Christian Hakala.

Silver Stars lose two sharp-fielding Quicksteps

The Northfield Silver Stars to a player will tell you the Minneapolis Quicksteps is one great defensive team.  The Quicksteps proved that point inning after inning on route to a 6-3 and 9-1 victories over the Silver Stars in two seven-inning games played June 27 in Dundas.

In the opener, the Silver Stars scored three in the first inning on consecutive doubles by Christian Hakala, Sam Richardson and Cory Hoyer, and then the iron curtain fell. The Silver Stars played well, but gave up three in the sixth, which broke the tie in a well-played game.

In the nightcap, sharp-fielding Quicksteps kept the Silver Stars off the bases. The Silver Stars managed only five hits and one run. We played good defense, too, with a Sam Richardson throw to home from short left field spoiling a grand slam home run attempt for the legendary Leon of Quickstep fame.

The Silver Stars take on the St. Croix Base Ball Club from Stillwater this Saturday, July 4, at 1 p.m. at the field below Old Main on the St. Olaf College campus.
